Our small group leader dropped by the afternoon of “The Morning-After” and handed me a copy of Ellie Holcomb’s devotional book, FIGHTING WORDS. The subtitle is “100 Days of Speaking Truth into the Darkness,” and something about that struck a chord in me. Our small group will be studying it together.
“Darkness” wants to envelope me, but I have a choice about that. We know who the ultimate victor is in the cosmic battle of the ages, but our “will” has so much to do with what we experience in the here and now. FIGHTING WORDS is one more weapon that God put in my hands that day.

THE BATTLE
Satan wants to implant his seeds of lies in my soul to fertilize my human desire to control my life. When conceived, it would produce darkness, including accusing God for allowing my dear Elaine to suffer and die as she did.
And so, embracing the “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” of Philippians 4:4 is a matter of my will. I know that if I get my eyes off of Jesus I’ll slide into the darkness. Satan hasn’t waited with his lies, and I can’t delay in humbly but boldly embracing and declaring Truth.
I “will,” to humble myself before Him. I “will,” to rejoice in Him and to declare Him good – worthy of my worship and my service even if – – -. This will impact every aspect of my life and service and Elaine would not want it any other way. In fact, it will fulfill a precious, prophetic, and private little note to me that I found on her desk.
“Thank you, Elaine. The spirit of your partnership with me lives on.”
I am weak but He is strong, and with your prayers I’ll carry on.
