Here’s an update on Elaine, although I struggle with the trying to avoid either overstating or understating her condition.
We are now under Hospice, not as an “end of life, keep her comfortable” thing as much as palliative care to address her recurrent and serious pain attacks, and her observable decline in strength and balance. We just started Hospice on Wednesday, and their nurse, social worker and chaplain have been absolutely wonderful.
The results in pain management are remarkable and she/we are sleeping much better with the meds they are giving her.
We use a wheelchair to move her around in the house, and I help with much of her personal care along with doing the cooking and laundry. My weak point is the housecleaning, and we have an Amish girl come in to help with that.
Elaine has served me, our family and others with humility and generosity in her years of strength, and she now deserves to be served that way in her time of weakness. I feel privileged to get to do that. From the beginning, 62+ years ago, our life has been very much a “Ken & Elaine” thing in all we’ve done, and that won’t change. She has been my loving, supporting, and forgiving partner through thick and thin for all these years.
She would treasure your cards or little personal notes to her at P.O. Box 228, Kidron, OH 44636 USA. I’m not on Facebook much these days, and I don’t do well at seeing all the Messages, but you can personalize a note to her as a Comment there and she will see it.
We have seen God’s hand in wonderful ways at every turn in this journey. I have asked Him to make this a time of instructing and correcting me and He has honored that in some rich ways. He has also used it to draw Elaine and me together more deeply than ever.
Your prayers will be greatly appreciated as we continue on the path together. Thank you.
